What can you not live without while traveling?

Recently we read an article that focused on the Duchess of Sussex. As you all might know, Mel & Suan are republicans – ie we are do not believe in nobility. But the article was not about all of those things. It was all about what the Duchess said she cannot do without while on journeys.

Well, let us summarize for you. Essentially the commoner turned duchess shared her personal tips for travel, including what she would bring with her to meet exigencies that may crop up. Such as little nicks and stings.

Mel has a sinus issue that acts up whenever the plane descends. The pressure somehow acts on his inner ears that cause severe pain. So much that he’d have a headache that might lead to a flu later on… knock on effects one might say. So what is his panacea? A couple of pairs of ear plugs. It also helps reduce the noise beating on one’s ear drums (yeah it can get to 105 decibels at takeoff).

So what are the things that you cannot “live” without while on a journey?

Do you sleep well at night?

Ok, what we meant is – do you have a good rest each night when you are on your travels around the world? Some people say they cannot sleep while flying. Or that they cannot fall into a nice deep sleep in an unfamiliar environment. And it was this article that set us thinking about whether one gets sufficient rest while in one’s journey.

Sure this was more about hotels etc… but some of the tips are quite useful.

Yes there is so much literature out there about the optimal hours of sleep. But obviously with the precious limited vacation time that many have, each day out there will have to be fully harnessed? Surely a few days will not matter?

We think that regardless of whether a journey is for business or leisure, having enough rest is critical. We recall the days when we joined group tours. Oftentimes in that distant past, we get to check into the hotels in the dead of the night. And a typical morning call would be like 6am in the morning. You hardly get a good 5-6 hours of sleep and many a time some will be caught napping on the coach. Imagine that, with the coach driving across the scenic mountains of Norway and you are asleep?

Do you stick to a regime of sleep every night when you travel? Or do you maximize your time exploring and partying away till late? Which is the better way?

Manage stress with travel?

Not sure if you are familiar with the saying : “Health is Wealth”. There was one flight in which both Mel and Suan coincidentally watched the same movie. The Japanese satirical movie’s story centred around how a squire worked for a samurai lord.

In the story, this squire falls asleep and is visited by the first god. This one’s the god of health. In it, the god told the squire he was about to take away his health. A healthy dose of conversation took place as part of the movie… The squire awoke and thought nothing of it. Some time later, he fell ill with fever and could not get out of bed. It was difficult to sleep but when he did he dreamt that the wealth god had come.stress

“Aaargh, away with you wealth!!” cried the wealth god to the squire and as quickly as he came he was gone. When he finally awaken, our squire was surrounded by family. They sobbed to him : “oh how the samurai lord has seized all our moneys and treasures for his war!”. All the events that followed and the stress cause the squire to fall into a coma – clearly shocked. It’s dark and gloomy and all the squire could see was the mist. Then a clearing. A figure. A hideous looking figure of a man. That our dear friends was the god of death!

If this report is true, it’s definitely alarming!

We once heard from friends posted to work in the Philippines that people they knew in the corporate circles were ‘dropping like flies’. Perhaps they drank and partied too much…but…and this is a true qualification; many years back we had good friends who reported having gout and hypertension. And these folks were at the height of their early 30s. All because of the food we eat and the little exercise we do. And it seems that apart from lifestyles and diets, stress of life (and/or work) are very likely factors too.

While it is one thing to manage our diets, it may be quite another to manage stress. Can travel help distract you from stress or will it worsen the situation? Remember our post on whether you are overworked? Do you feel stress is overwhelming you?
